Structure is information
A heading is not just bigger text; it says «everything until the next heading belongs to this section.» A list says «these items are peers.» A table says «these cells share a row.» Plain text erases those signals — the model has to infer them, and inference costs accuracy. Markdown makes structure explicit and cheap to consume.
The practical difference
Ask two identical questions — one over a plain-text paste, one over Markdown — and the pattern is consistent: the Markdown version produces answers that respect the document's sections, quote the right table row, and follow the requested output format more reliably. The gap is largest for structured documents: specs, reports, contracts, research pages.
Getting Markdown from paper
Markdown does not exist in a scan — it has to be inferred during OCR. A layout-aware engine maps the page structure it detects (headings, lists, tables) onto Markdown conventions. This is more than cosmetic: it means a scanned document can arrive in the chat already structured, not just transcribed.
What to check in converted Markdown
- Headings: the document's real hierarchy, not every bold line turned into a heading.
- Tables: consistent pipes and a header row; merged cells flattened honestly.
- Lists: real lists, not paragraphs that happen to start with a dash.
- Code and formulas: preserved verbatim, not «cleaned up» into prose.
When plain text is the right choice
If the document is genuinely unstructured — a letter, a page of prose — Markdown adds nothing and a plain paragraph stream is fine. The rule of thumb: the more structure the original has, the more Markdown is worth.
